Walt Disney To Soon Release It’s First VR Short Film

VR has been swaying its way into the entertainment field for a while, but the technology has not really received a push. Though companies have been manufacturing VR headsets, and though the technology is being pioneered in other fields when coming to entertainment, there is a lot that needs to be done.

A change is coming regarding that, and now finally, VR might be getting the needed push that it deserves. Walt Disney Animation Studios is prepping up to debut its first VR short film.

Termed as Cycles, the short film is set to be released this August in Vancouver. This film would be released at the ACM’s Computer Graphics Conference, and will also be the main event.

The conference would showcase the new innovations that have arrived in the field of VR, AR and MR entertainment. This new project is a first for Disney, and also a first for the film’s director, Jeff Gipson.

Jeff Gipson is no newbie to animation as he had a huge role in the making of films like Frozen, Zootopia, and Moana.

Horizons

So, what does the company expect from such a project? An emotional connection. When you are watching 2D or even 3D, you are never really a part of the story. But with VR, one gets the experience of entering the story and journeying with the characters.

That, in turn, brings out a close connection or emotional bond with the viewer and with the character on screen. And with Cycles, the director hopes that the viewer will understand the emotions that the characters go through and that the viewer shares the same emotions with them.

The short film cycle revolves around the meaning of creating a home, and also focuses on what everyone goes through in creating a family and a life. The story portrays the various ups and downs, and all the joy or sadness that comes with it.

The story is derived from almost every family life, and the story takes the viewer into the story, and the viewer and experience and feel the story and the life of the characters from a single standpoint. The short film is set to be the new standard in animation films, especially in VR.

Technology

But though this sounds exciting and fun, creating stories and movies like there is no easy task. The team worked with 50 collaborators over four months to get this project done. Various techniques like Quill VR animations and motion capture were used to bring this project to a finish.

This might be a new project for Disney, but the company is giving its all to the project, and this might very well be a very memorable film, in fact, the first VR film from Disney would be something that we would not want to forget for a very long time. Though Pixar had already released a VR trailer for its film Coco, this is the first time that VR is being taken this seriously in filmmaking.

One can be sure that with backing from influential and industry changing companies like Disney and Pixar, VR can soon become the industry standard in filmmaking, and the dream of a full, widespread VR cinema will soon be a reality.
