NYPD Teams Up With IBM In Developing Enhanced Facial Recognition Technology

When is the last time you saw real life-like facial recognition? A facial recognition that scans almost your whole body, even your skin tone? Might be a sci-fi movie. But now, you don’t need to get to the movies, because that has just come true. NYPD has been working on a facial recognition technology for a while now, and the motive is to identify a particular person in a crowd.

Though that might sound pretty simple, it is not. And that is why the NYPD is teamed up with the IBM. They have combinedly developed a new technology that has access to over thousands of images that are taken from just 50 cameras in the city. Another reason that makes this really amazing is the fact that this technology scans based on the skin color, and also by other characteristic elements in a person.

This calls out for truly deep searches, thus making sure that a person might always be found in a crowd. This information was revealed by The Intercept media, and the paper’s reporters have also contacted the NYPD for clarification. The NYPD responded by saying that videos were provided to IBM from time to time so that the company could better work in its facial recognition technology.

Secure Sharing

But NYPD has also made it clear that the sharing also includes the sharing of data with IBM for system development purposes. This also includes the fact that suppliers who have entered into such an agreement with the NYPD have also signed such an agreement to keep things confidential. So, if anything does get leaked out, we would know.

Higher Security

But still, a question remains, that if the NYPD is confident that these technology services would not misuse the information, why hasn’t this service or deal been made public? Well, undoubtedly security and safety concerns would dictate that something like this not is made known to others. When coming to security, no one would like to take any risks, and that is exactly what the NYPD has done by keeping this confidential.

But still, that does not mean that there are no concerns regarding this new technology. Questions arise as to when this technology would be put to use, and also how much resources have been put into a project like this.
