Facebook To Release New Hardware Other Than the Portal

Facebook has been releasing a ton of hardware recently, including the Facebook Portal, a device that puts Facebook’s microphone and camera into your living room. And if that is not scary, we don’t know what is. The Portal allows for Messenger and fellow Portal users to call each other. This new hardware might be the first for Facebook, but reports suggest that the company is already working on something new.

And reports also have hints on what that something new might be. It seems that Facebook is working on a product that will accompany the Facebook app and even the portal that would take up the form of, or work in TVs. and honestly, that does not seem like a very bad idea. Facebook has slowly taken videos seriously and has launched Facebook Watch, an IGTV replica that showcases videos that are either trending or suggested for users.

New Developments

If Facebook couples a large display to go with this, then videos can be viewed in a much more comfortable atmosphere. The Portal is already a sign that Facebook is willing to experiment with this. This new product has been codenamed Ripley, and the product is set to launch in 2019. The device can combine a camera for calls, and also various other components that support streaming video.

Now Facebook already has its own VR service and product called the Oculus. This new product can be set to work alongside that, thus expanding the horizons of an already huge experience. But that does not mean that everyone wants a product from Facebook. Many already are scared to have an account on Facebook, worried about their personal data. And on top of that having a highly capable device in your house seems like something that many would no like to keep.

Security Concerns

Consider Facebook’s Portal, for example. The concerns are rising about this product as the device uses AI to track people’s presence and automatically senses their movement in a room. Now that is even scarier. Now that the device isn’t even released yet, it cannot be said if the market would accept this product or not.

The company is also rumored to be working on two other unreleased devices as well, and they don’t seem to be like any ordinary devices. These devices can read brainwaves to determine words that one wants to type, and also an armband that can turn sound into vibration. Facebook likes to call it a device that can hear through your skin.

Facebook might be working on a lot but with the recent scandal many question the reliability of these services and the technology that is being tagged along with it.
