Bipedal Robot Developed with a Flying Head
Making a bipedal robot is very different and much more complex than building any other ordinary robot. With a bipedal robot, you need to make sure that there is always a balance maintained, and that your robot does not fall flat to the ground. Atlas, a well-known bipedal robot can do multiple complex functions, but there is always a chance that the robot tips over and breaks its head.
Well, developers have come forward with a new type of robot that manages to maintain it’s balanced and yet use that ability to power itself in flight. The University of Tokyo has created such a product which it calls as the Aerial-Biped. This robot can’t be called as truly bipedal. This robot is designed to act like a bipedal robot, but still somehow manages to avoid all the issues and problems that come from being a bipedal robot.
The robot’s head is used as a quadcopter, and that allows the robot to move around and not depend on its legs for movement. This means that the robot can move around freely, in a much more quicker rate without wondering if it would fall or trip over. These legs mimic the movements of walking, and so it can be called more like puppetry.
Bipedal Robot
The goal, according to the team who made the robot is that the robot develops the ability to display the ability or appearance of walking with a whole new mobility. With this new feature, the robot is able to mimic a walking motion with slender motions, more like a flamingo without impairing dynamic mobility.
Cheaper Price
Speed and agility isn’t the only advantage of this feature. The price is also way cheaper when compared to an ordinary or conventional bipedal walking robot. There is also an aspect of safety too. Today bipedal robots have been put to use in areas where there is a lot of human movement. An incident where such a robot falls over humans would be crazy, and so such a feature would be absolutely something that can be applied, where nothing falls over anyone.
This isn’t the first robot that functions in this way. The robot is very similar to Ballu, a blimp robot with a similar floating head and spindly legs. This new robot also has the ability to walk and has learned to do so perfectly, via natural movements. The more impressing fact is that though the robot is a basic bipedal one, it is controlled aerially.
