A New Case To Save Your Phone From Drops
Forget intense slow-motion scenes in the movies. The most intense slow-motion sequence happens when you drop your phone. The phone that you researched so well, and the phone for which you had saved for months. As it goes down, you wonder if you will get lucky again, or if you would have to walk around with a cracked screen.
Well, we all have faced and gone through this situation. No matter how sturdy or strong our phones seem to be, we are always worried if they will truly last or not. Well, a new case has been introduced to the market that seems to have solved the problem.
A new case, called the “active damping” case is the ultimate mobile savior, period. This case acts as an airbag for your phone. The idea was brought forward by an engineer at the Aalen University in Germany named Philip Frenzel.
Working
The idea is simple, yet at the same time brilliant. The shell that the mastermind came up with deploys only when the phone is in danger. Now how does that work? The activation mechanism detects when the phone is in free fall and then activates the next step.
Though one might think that deploying an actual airbag mechanism is brilliant, it does not really work that way. A foam-based alternative doesn’t prove to be practical. So he came up with the idea of protecting the phone with something springy instead of something soft.
And that leads us to the present case. The case consists of a set of eight thin metal curls that normally lie flat inside the case. But when released, these metal curls pop and curl up, and thus protect the edges of the phone from impact. It also softens the blow considerably. Of course, a full-blown flat means a cracked screen.
Release
This system uses the proximity sensor and checks if the phone is inside a bag or pocket, or is it in free air in a suicide mission. Though it would be pretty horrifying if the case decides to open while still inside the pocket. But fret not, that’s not going to happen.
So, when would we be able to grab this case? Well, it’s not up for sale yet. But, the technology has been patented, and Frenzel has already started marketing too. So we can expect all our phones to be bouncing around when fitting the ground pretty soon.
