Light To Release A Multiple Camera Smartphone

Remember the time when having a 2MP rear camera was a big deal? Well, who remembers and why when smartphones are coming out with 2 (and 3) rear cameras. But if that is not insane enough for you, then Light, the company behind the famed L16 camera is coming out with a smartphone which features multiple cameras.

While we are busy ogling away at Apple’s dual rear camera in the iPhone X, Light is working on a smartphone prototype that features five to nine cameras. This is whole will feature a 64-megapixel shot. Apart from cameras, there are also a ton of sensors on the phone. All these come together in the hopes of being one of the best cameras available out there.

Sensors

The extra sensors increase the phone’s low-light performance and depth effects and use internal processing to stick the image together. Though this might seem that the phone might be much bulkier due to the extra lenses and sensors, it actually is not. In fact, the entire package is not thicker than an iPhone X.

Back in 2015 Light company introduced the L16 camera that costs

$1,950. The camera was up for purchase by 2017. This camera, in particular, used 16 lenses to capture the 52-megapixel imagery. The results were truly remarkable, and the pictures came out with perfect clarity.

Though there was nothing lacking in the image quality as such, consumers preferred the portability and usability of a smartphone other than just having a camera. And that is exactly what the company is doing now. Though the camera was pretty light and portable then, it is now downsizing it again to fit it into a smartphone.

Competition

But this does not make Light stand out in the crowd. Camera maker RED is also near to releasing its own smartphone that features a modular lens system, and can also be used as a viewfinder for RED’s cinema cameras. Major smartphone players are also in the race with companies like Huawei releasing the P21 Pro that features three lenses to give users the best possible option for color, monochrome and also zoom.

This not a new concept, though. Nokia had already released a 41MP camera phone years back. The Nokia Lumia 1020 featured a PureView 808 sensor too in the phone. If not for the Windows phone ecosystem, the Lumia 1020 would have been a phone that we all would have literally died for.

It is expected that the Light phone would be competing on the same lines as the Nokia Lumia 1020 had. Though not a lot of information is available on the phone right now, especially about the due date, it is clear that the Light phone would have a lot of competition, and that the company would have to put all hands on deck to pull off such a phone.
